1. Disable SIR system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Remove screws from
back of steering wheel. Raise air bag, note position of wiring for reassembly reference. Disconnect SIR
coil electrical connector and CPA clip. Push and turn horn contact lead counterclockwise to remove from
cam tower. Disconnect horn ground lead. Disconnect steering wheel controls electrical connector (if
equipped).
2. Remove air bag module. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tilt air bag and install top edge first.
Ensure wiring is not pinched between air bag module and steering wheel. Tighten air bag mounting
screws to 27 INCH lbs. (3 N.m).
STEERING WHEEL
Removal & Installation
1. Turn ignition switch to OFF-LOCK position. Remove air bag. See AIR BAG (INFLATOR)
MODULE . Remove steering wheel nut. Mark steering wheel hub in relation to steering shaft for
installation reference.
2. Using Steering Wheel Puller (J-1859-03) with Side Screws (J-38720), remove steering wheel. Remove
steering wheel puller. To install, reverse removal procedure. Route wiring through steering wheel. Align
marks made during removal. Tighten steering wheel nut to 30 ft. lbs. (41 N.m).
UPPER & LOWER COVER
Removal & Installation
Disconnect negative battery cable. Disable SIR system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG
SYSTEM . Tilt column to center position. Remove upper cover, tilt lever knob and lock cylinder bezel.
Remove lower cover and wiring guard. To install reverse removal procedure. Tighten tilt lever screw to 30
INCH lbs. (3.4 N.m). Tighten upper and lower cover screws to 46 INCH lbs. (5.2 N.m).
BRAKE TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK (BTSI) SOLENOID
Removal & Installation (Column Shift)
Remove upper and lower cover. See UPPER & LOWER COVER . Remove mounting screws and solenoid
from column. Disconnect interlock solenoid electrical connector. To install reverse removal procedure. Tighten
screws to 15 INCH lbs. (1.7 N.m)
CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems
may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer
systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN
PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting
battery.
NOTE: On models with column shift, it may be necessary to lower or remove steering
column to remove upper and lower cover. See STEERING COLUMN.
