The room should be prepared as per the attached Figure 3. Walls are cleaned, slick
spots roughened and patches smoothed with sandpaper and old paint scraped and
patched. The floor and contents should be covered.
Switch and outlet face plates shall be removed from the wall. Wall and ceiling lighting
fixtures are either removed or loosened from wall or ceiling to permit enclosing them in
plastic bags or taped. Hardware such as door knobs, picture hooks, and thermostat
covers have been removed.

Use primers as stated. Primer is used to seal in stains and to provide a consistent
surface that enhances the bond between the finish paint and the surface.
Painting techniques
Start by painting a clean edge where a ceiling meets a wall of another color and along
all edges where paint stops. Cutting in is best done with a brush, although roller covers
and paint pads are made for this.
When painting a wall and ceiling different colors, the standard approach is to let the
lighter of the two colors overlap this edge, cutting in the darker of the colors over it.
Use a painting edge if needed.
If moldings are finished wood and we don’t want paint on them, mask off with painter’s
masking tape.
Once the room’s outline is all cut, roll the ceiling and walls. Distribute paint over the
entire roller and evenly. Do not overload the roller with paint. Use a zigzag pattern then
with parallel strokes at a 90 degree angle to the original zigzag. Roll up and down.
Look for skipped spots. Go over these areas with a fairly “dry” roller cover.
Remove all tape and protective coverings. Properly dispose of items. Reinstall all
electrical cover plates and hardware. Clean up all areas.
