1200 Mile Service
The engine in your BMW M3, M5 and M6 is a
race-bred engine design which includes
increased power output and maximum engine
speeds compared to conventional BMW 5 and 6
Series engines. The increased power output also
affects other major drivetrain components such
as the transmission and the rear axle differential.
The 1200 Mile Service requires changing the oil
in the engine, as well as in the transmission
(transmission fluid does not need to be changed
for an M3 with the optional M-DCT Drivelogic
transmission) and the differential.
NOTE: M3 with the optional M-DCT Drivelogic
does not require changing the transmission fluid.
The fluid has a long-term rating and does not
need to be changed except for system repairs.
Quality Certification I
For a detailed list of items inspected, refer to the
Quality Certification I form provided to the Owner
at time of delivery. A copy of the form is on file at
the selling BMW center.
Maintenance Summary
The Condition Based Service (CBS) system will
determine the requirement for performance of
the maintenance services described on this and
the following page. These services may be
required either individually or in conjunction with
other maintenance services.
Standard operations
Maintenance work:
䉯 Verify Check Control messages.
䉯 Check indicator and warning lights.
䉯 Reset CBS display.
䉯 Inspect tires, adjust tire pressures and reset
Tire Pressure Monitor.
Engine oil service
Maintenance work:
䉯 Change the engine oil and oil filter. Use only
Castrol TWS Motorsport 10W-60 Synthetic
Oil P/N 07 51 0 009 420.
䉯 M3 only: At every 2nd engine oil change:
Intake air cleaner: Replace air filter element
(reduce replacement interval in dusty
operating conditions).
䉯 M3 with standard transmission: At every 3rd
Engine Oil Service:
– Change the transmission fluid and clean the
oil filter (NOTE: this does not apply to the
optional M-DCT Drivelogic transmission.)
– Change the differential fluid.
䉯 M5 and M6: At every 3rd Engine Oil Service
(after the 1200 Mile Service):
– Change the transmission gear oil.
– On SMG transmission, clean the oil filter.
– Change the differential fluid.
– Replace the engine air cleaner element.
䉯 Parking brake: Check function and
pre-burnish.
Microfilter (not shown in CBS)
Maintenance work:
䉯 Replace ventilation microfilter every 2 years
based on the vehicle production date, or in
connection with scheduled brake fluid change.
