SECTION 3
OPERATING THE SYSTEM
XPS-ProMail System Operations 4-24-14.doc 33
Clearing (purging) the Ink Cartridge Nozzles
If the XPS-ProMail 3.0/4.0 Printer has been sitting idle (not printing), it is a good idea to
purge the printheads before beginning to run a job.
This can be done from the Printer’s Control Panel; as follows:
1. Take the printer Off-Line.
2. Press the MENU key momentarily.
3. Use the + key to scroll to the “PURGE” feature and then press the ENTER key. If the
rest of the system is setup to run; a piece of media will feed and a purge pattern will
be printed onto it. If desired; press ENTER again to print an additional purge image.
4. Press the MENU key to exit the Menu features.
Check that the purge pattern is complete, without any blank areas or white streaks.
If the pattern is OK, then immediately send the job and start printing.
If the pattern is not complete then you should run the purge again.
If the pattern is still not complete then you may need to clean or replace the ink cartridges
(printheads). See the “Maintenance” section.
Automatic Purge: For an automatic purge, at the start of every print job; set the Printer’s
Menu feature “Purge First Piece” to ON.
In addition; some software programs have built-in features to purge the first piece or to do a
periodic purge during the print job.
Purge While Printing:
To do a purge in the middle of a job, follow these steps:
Press ENTER key to stop feeding media.
Press the ON LINE key to take the printer off-line.
Press the MENU key.
Select “Press Enter to Purge”.
Press ENTER key to start the purge process. Repeat if necessary.
Press the MENU key to exit the Menu features.
Press the ON LINE and then the ENTER key to get back to normal printing.
Note. If a paper jam occurs during the purge, you should use the address recovery
feature to get back to normal printing. Otherwise you will lose records.
Printing a Test Print
A test print is built into the printer. Make sure the printer is off-line, and then press the TEST
PRINT key momentarily. The display will indicate it is working. Then the display will go to
Press Enter Key to print. Pressing the Enter key will start the media feeding and the printer
will print the standard test image.
Tip: A 6” x 9” mail piece is required to print the “factory TEST image”.
