Volser, VSN Vo lume Serial Number
An up to sixteen-digit alphanumeric designation.
It identifies one medium (cartridge, optical disk)
in the archive.
Exception: optical disk has one logical
compartment but two volsers (A and B side).
The volser is attached to the rear of the medium on
a barcode label and can be read by the handling
unit.
