Side airbags (SIPS bags)

SIPS bags
The side airbag is equipped with a gas
generator. A sufficiently violent collision trips
the sensors, which ignite the gas generator,
inflating the side airbag. The airbag inflates
between the occupant and the door panel
and thereby cushions the initial impact while
deflating. The side airbag is only normally
deployed on the side of the collision.
