DIESEL EMISSIONS FLUID (DEF)
The new Duramax Diesel isn’t only the most powerful diesel pickup engine
Chevrolet has ever built – it’s also the cleanest burning. This reects Chevrolet’s
ongoing commitment to greener technologies across its lineup. Key to this
improvement is selective catalytic reduction using Diesel Emissions Fluid (DEF)
downstream in the exhaust. It reduces the amount of harmful Nitrogen Oxide
(NOx) emissions by 63 percent – representing the latest technology available.
The urea-based DEF solution is held in a separate storage tank and injected as
a ne mist into the hot exhaust gases. The heat turns the urea into ammonia
that, when combined in the catalytic converter, breaks down the NOx into
harmless nitrogen gas and water vapour. DEF also allows for optimum fuel
efciency by increasing the range between Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)
burn-off cycles to over 1100 km. The facts on DEF:

Yet another innovation from the Duramax-Allison tandem – the new
standard smart exhaust brake system that uses back pressure on the
exhaust to help slow the truck. The system’s variable vane geometry turbo
adjusts automatically to different loads and grades, resulting in better
grade descent control. It also helps prolong brake life. The system works
with the standard Tow/Haul mode and auto grade braking features of the
Allison automatic transmission.
What makes the segment-exclusive Allison 6-speed automatic transmission
so strong and durable? It is the same technology that is used in many
medium-duty commercial truck applications, so it is engineered to take
the abuse associated with enormous loads. The Allison transmission is
engineered exclusively for higher torque demands and has specic gear
ratios to maximize the performance of the Duramax diesel.
