3.1.1 Preparatory work on E39/2 model
Print out error memory.
Disconnect battery.
Remove load compartment floor cover (felt).
Remove sliding floor with rails from load compartment.
Remove tool support and jack.
Remove side trim on left wheel arch.
Remove steering wheel airbag (cars between 9.96 and 9.98 only, follow safety instructions for airbag removal).
Go back to section 2
3.1.2 Preparatory work on E39 model
Print out error memory.
Disconnect battery.
Remove boot lid at the left.
Remove CD changer if applicable.
Remove steering wheel airbag (cars between 9.96 and 9.98 only, follow safety instructions for airbag removal).

3.1.3 Preparatory work on E38 model
Print out error memory.
Disconnect battery.
Remove boot lid at the left.
Remove video module and holder if applicable.
Remove holder for CD changer from CD changer if applicable (no longer required).
Remove the SE unit or electronic charger with cable compensator from the traverse
(from telephone/mobile phone Phase V only).
Remove the SE unit or electronic charger with cable compensator from the holder
(from telephone/mobile phone Phase V only).
Remove steering wheel airbag (cars between 9.96 and 9.98 only, follow safety instructions for airbag removal).
