|  Safety
At BMW, there are two types of safety engineering. There are active safety features, like a BMW’s quick acceleration, agile handling and massive fade-resistant brakes, which help you avoid
accidents. Driving aids, such as Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection, and Active Blind Spot Detection, also help alert you to potential dangers that you might not otherwise see. BMWs also
offer passive safety features, like safety belts, airbags and Active Head Restraints, which help protect you in case an accident cannot be avoided. And it’s reassuring to know that, should an
impact occur, your BMW can even summon assistance and provide easy access to emergency aid workers. At BMW, safety engineering also comes under the category of “high performance.”
Confi dence is an integral ingredient in driving enjoyment. That’s why BMW offers an impressive
array of driving aids designed to keep you informed without distracting you from the job at hand.
Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go
uses radar measurements to automatically maintain a
preset speed and distance between your vehicle and the one ahead – even in heavy rush-hour
traffi c; the Forward Collision Warning feature sounds an alert if you are approaching the vehicle
ahead too quickly. Lane Departure Warning uses a camera near the rear-view mirror to monitor
road lane markings.
If you begin to change lanes without fi rst using the turn signal – a possible
indicator of drowsiness – the steering wheel discreetly vibrates as a reminder. Active Blind Spot
Detection uses radar sensors at the rear to monitor traffi c in adjacent lanes, covering an area from
your blind spot rearward for nearly  feet. If you activate the turn signal when there is another
vehicle in that lane, the LED blinks and the steering wheel vibrates as a warning not to change
lanes. Head-up Display is designed to project important driving information – speed, Check
Control warnings, directional arrows from the Navigation system, and cruise control information –
onto the windshield in your line of sight. BMW Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection provides
an increased margin of safety at night. An infrared camera in the front bumper scans up to 
feet ahead,
detecting people as well as the direction of their movement up to  feet away.
This is displayed on the iDrive screen – and, if so equipped, on the Head-up Display.
Cruise Control is not a substitute for the driver’s own responsibility in adjusting speed and otherwise controlling the vehicle.
After evaluating the road, traffi c and visibility conditions, the driver must decide whether and how the system is used.
Requires clearly defi nable lane markings that are not obscured by rain, snow, etc. Lane Departure Warning feature is not a
substitute for the driver’s own responsibility in maintaining control of the vehicle.
Under optimal road conditions. Night Vision performance is also limited by rain, fog, humidity and other weather conditions.
In case of an accident, the  Series Gran
Turismo is equipped with a comprehensive
passive safety system. First and foremost
is the passenger cell: a highly rigid hybrid
construction of high-strength steel and
aluminum. In a high-speed collision, it is
designed to direct crash forces around the
passenger cabin, while deforming in a
predetermined pattern. In a fraction of a second,
a sophisticated network of sensors throughout
the vehicle determines the type of accident,
and is designed to trigger the appropriate
safety feature(s). These may include safety-
belt pretensioners, front-seat Active Head
Restraints, dual-stage front airbags, seat-
mounted side-impact airbags, and curtain-type,
front-to-rear Head Protection System.
BMW’s attention to passenger safety doesn’t
end after an accident has occurred. Hazard
lights are automatically activated, interior lights
turned on, and doors unlocked to facilitate
rescue operations. The fuel pump and battery
are disconnected. In addition, the BMW Assist
system will automatically transmit your vehicle’s
location and crash information, such as airbag
deployment, seat occupation or the side of
impact, to a response specialist, who will then
speak to you to determine if you are all right.
Even if you cannot respond to their call, a
second response specialist will request
dispatch of appropriate emergency services
to your location.
